The Day Before the First

Tomorrow's going to be the first day of my major examinations. It's hard to grasp how after eighteen years, and after these two weeks and a half have passed, I can burn my books in a bonfire and it won't matter anymore.
I perhaps shouldn't even be writing up this post right now, but I was reading a few poems preparing for my unseen commentary tomorrow and came across this, which I felt was the perfect and most timely advice quelling my imminent freak-out (cue Chic's Le Freak and replace it with "not chic) before my literature examination.
Introduction to Poetry
By Billy Collins

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
 like a colour slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem’s room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the author’s name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

PHOTOGRAPHER Annie Leibovitz
MODEL Natalia Vodianova
 STYLIST Camilla Nickerson
HAIR Recine
MAKE UP Diane Kendal

While mournfully cutting my hair, I glanced across this beautiful, picturesque editorial featuring one of my favourite models (beautiful inside and out) - Natalia! Absolutely love the warm hues of this shoot and the great outdoors being the perfect backdrop for such simple and comfortable clothes.

Shipwrecked

PHOTOGRAPHER Emily Abay
STYLIST Ivana Martyn-Zyznikow
MAKEUP/HAIR Ania Milczarczyk
MODEL Anja Konstantinova
SOURCE fashiongonerogue

This shoot is absolutely stunning, combining two of my favourite things - the sea and complimentary pastels. Anja Konstantinova also gives me a somewhat Abbey Lee vibe here as well, takes us all back to the good old days of the golden 2006-10 era.

Update

It's been a while since I've updated here. I've been drowned under the rapid surge of the exam sea - there're so many things to do and not enough time to do everything I want to.

This blog post shall just be a short one of the most miscellaneous things:
1) Along with managing school work, revision, uni apps, there's still the dread of finding a prom dress. I think I found one.
2) Just discovered an immense love for frozen watermelons - probably due to my long-term relationship with popsicles and all those sorts of icy stuff. It's really simple as well, just cut your watermelon up into tiny triangles, stick a fork in and put 'em in the freezer for about a day or less. Try it!
Here's me and sister hand-modelling for these on my Instagram. I miss her loads - she recently left us to study in the UK! Despite weekly Skypes, it doesn't feel the same. I have successfully dominated her room though, and have taken on her identity in old PJs and forgotten things she didn't take over there (not in a creepy way)! Can't wait for us to reunite at the end of the year at Christmas.

3) And talking so much about studying, I found I work best when listening to calm music, sipping hot coffee in Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (I think they know my name already… I've been going way too often) and working on essays to hand in. Here are two playlists which I've made that I like to listen to when my brain is working like a machine - also a good way to relax after!

Have a lovely week! :)

Music: Sweater Weather Playlist

Today I went to watch Maleficent and boy was Angelina Jolie perfection! She looked so beautiful and strong despite playing a supposed "villain" and her acting was definitely top notch - as well as the production! It was a beautiful film, definitely advocating the right values (a little tired after repeating it from Frozen though, almost makes me feel like they're capitalizing on it but it probably wasn't their intent), and the sets and animation were breathtaking - definitely made it realistic and otherworldly. I personally feel she made the show though - can't picture anyone else doing a better job than she did, honestly.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see the familiar face of  Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter's Dolores Umbridge Pink Fanatic) and also the appearance of Angelina's daughter!
So, if you happen to be free, do go and watch this amazing film, I highly recommend it!
Also, here's a playlist I made inspired by the gloomy voice of Lana Del Rey crooning out the famous tune from Disney's age old Sleeping Beauty as the credits rolled - her rendition was absolutely chilling. Enjoy and follow if you'd like!
Have a great weekend :)

What is your favourite season and why?
I live in Singapore so sadly, I don't get to experience the seasons but if I were living somewhere else, I probably would love spring or autumn - spring because it's the season for the blooming of flowers and the weather is sunny and encouraging, autumn because I just really crave for the crunching sound of dried leaves and the look of pavements browned or yellowed by a blanket of crispy, fallen leaves.

What 5 makeup products can't you live without?
Haha I don't wear make up, but do own a few so I shall just list them here since they almost fit the limit (+1):
In a clockwise direction: Topshop "Sunbeam" Highlighter, Nivea Fruity Shine Pink Guava, Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in No. 15 Pudgy Peony, Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick Matte 010 Wine Not, Revlon Colorburst™ Lip Butter 035 Candy Apple, Lancome Paris Sparkling Cherub Sheer Warming Illuminating Powder

What is your favourite genre of music and what artist do you like?
God... music questions always catch me in the worst way - I find it the hardest thing to explain the kind of music I like, unlike others who can just simply say a particular genre! I actually don't mind all musics, except the occasional flouncy superficial and meaningless pop songs I guess. Basically, trying to break it down, I would say I like alternative music (rock/pop/folk), musicals (broadway, frozen, hairspray, that thingamajib), electronic, R&B.....
You could follow me on Spotify or 8tracks if you'd like to! I'd love to check out your playlists and music as well.

Who are you favourite bloggers?
I guess you'll find out at the end of this post and by reading my previous Liebster Award nominees?
Also, I love:

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Bali/UK/France

Who/What inspires you?
My grandfather, flowers, tears, music, poetry, literature, smiles, light, darkness

What are your fears?
Death of a loved one, rats, lizards, crows, drowning, falling

If you only had one day to live what would you do in it?
Spend it with the people I love, skydive

What are your hobbies?
I love reading, sketching, painting with watercolours, writing letters, listening to music, watching Criminal Minds, collecting magazines and perfumes.

What qualities do you look for in those you surround yourself with (friends, family, loved ones etc..)
Someone who can smile, who cares for others, is selfless, friendly, humble, loyal and loving.

What plans do you have for yourself?
I hope to finish my final year well with perseverance and determination, before I go off to university to study Law

I'd like to thank Tara for nominating me for this award - I really appreciate it and am so honoured! It was really fun answering all your questions.
I shall now be nominating...
- Helen
- Emily
- Sophie Jane
- Emma Jane
... to answer these questions:
What's your favourite song, currently?
What's your favourite weather?
Dream vacation destination?
Oldest clothing item you have in your closet?
What is your favourite flower?
What's your favourite scent?
What do you usually have for breakfast?
If you were a character in a book, who would you be?

If You're Losing Sleep

a hiaku about being sick:
stuck in bed all day
need to get well soon or else
work shall swallow me

i finally got my film developed from laneway! tried out a new film developing store and am pretty pleased with the results :)
laneway was absolutely amazing, one of the best days ever! it was my first time ever attending one and although it was crowded and hot, the atmosphere and live music was just perfect.
(i should have put more sunscreen though)

Film: The Royal Tenenbaums

i'd just like to start off saying i am the most incapable person at up-keeping a blog - i'm so sorry i've been so busy with the start of school... it's only been a month (??)
anyway, today's a holiday because of chinese new year and i decided to watch the royal tenenbaums, directed by one of my favourite directors of all time: wes anderson film god.
every scene, snippet, prop, backdrop, outfit, EVERYTHING is perfect, i truly can't describe how happy and satisfied it makes me to watch one of his films (you have to watch the life aquatic with steve zissou as well, i would love to be part of team zissou)
