Art feature: Ben Giles

This post is entirely dedicated to the fascinating and wonderful artist Ben Giles, whose vibrant artwork and collages catch me breathless. He is a 20-year-old fine artist from Bury St Edmunds, who currently resides in Kingston. He has been featured in numerous magazines and you can find out more about him and his amazing work here. Art inspiration: Peter Carrington
So, I was browsing through Tumblr and I found a few of these illustrations and I thought they were amazingly inspiring and breathtaking, and it's really got this magical aura about it that draws me into the drawing.
These drawings are by the talented Peter Carrington, an illustrator from Manchester, who makes artworks about science, natural history and his struggle to gain knowledge.
As Carrington states, “I’ve always had an interest in science and nature, and during my studies I decided to combine this with my practice. Through deeper research into different scientific areas it quickly became apparent that, due to having dyslexia, I was never going to get a grip of the topics to make work that wasn’t shallow and ill-informed. I became frustrated that I wouldn’t be able to use the visual language of the sciences that I had become obsessed with. It was at this point that this frustration became the forefront of the work and the drawings became a portrait of me and my struggle with dyslexia. I began using the visuals of science and natural history journals to create seemingly scientific illustrations.”
Carrington’s work harkens back to the history of biology and botany, where drawing and labels were the key to all knowledge, then he adds his own bit of mystical influence.

Here comes the feeling you thought you'd forgotten
I was just looking through editorials and found the loveliest and cutest spread in the world. It's from Elle Belgium's June issue and I love how graffiti artist Kid Acne incorporated his pop art characters, they're all so cute!

Next week, I'll be going away to Bali and I'm really excited! My family goes every year and it's one of the most relaxing places to go to. Not looking forward to when I get back home though, because I'll be going to two camps back to back, and the camps will be one day apart, the first one starting a day after I get home from Bali. Wish me luck!
Meanwhile, I'm really really really too excited for words for The Great Gatsby coming out in December. I'm almost finishing Fitzgerald's novel now and it's very interesting - I love the entire feel of the story and it's 1920 American context. It's going to be perfect, I just know it. Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy! I can't wait till it starts showing.
It's movie night tonight with my family, I hope we're watching something interesting! Have a lovely week ahead x
